Real Madrid drop interest in Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of Ibrahima Konaté, however, the La Liga side have now informed Liverpool that they no longer hold an interest in the France international.

Real Madrid have shown themselves keen to jump on market opportunities. The club signed Trent Alexander-Arnold for a cut-price fee, just weeks before the expiry of his contract at Liverpool last summer, and they signed Kylian Mbappé as a free agent the season before.

This time around, Real Madrid have been keen to sweep up a defender on a free transfer. Konaté has been a major target, as has his compatriot, Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano.

However, Los Blancos’ interest in Konaté has now been dropped, The Athletic understands. Liverpool have been informed. Talks over a contract extension at Anfield are ongoing amid the Frenchman’s downturn in form. There is an offer on the table, but no final decision has been taken.
