In the Group D match, Real Sociedad drew 1-1 with last season's Champions League runner-up Inter Milan. Real Sociedad were just minutes away from kicking off their Champions League campaign in style. Brais Mendez's early score gave the hosts the lead after four minutes, but Lautaro Martinez equalized late to clinch a point for Inter Milan.
It was a disappointing end to La Real's strong performance. They were the better team on the field, limiting Inter to very few chances. Lautaro's goal in the 87th minute was the Nerazzurri's first shot on goal. Imanol Alguacil was pleased with his team's performance. He, however, was dismayed that they lost the game so late, “We played a great game and even though we have drawn, the fans have to be very proud. I am annoyed because we came very close to winning.”
