River Plate target Retegui as transfer tug‑of‑war intensifies

River Plate are preparing an assertive move in the upcoming transfer window as they look to reinforce their attack, placing Al‑Qadsiah star Mateo Retegui at the top of their shortlist. According to reports from Futbol Fichajes, the 26‑year‑old Italian forward has impressed River’s management with his standout season in Saudi Arabia. Retegui joined Al‑Qadsiah last summer from Atalanta in a deal worth around €68.25 million and has since delivered 16 goals and one assist across 26 appearances.

River Plate are considering submitting an official offer, though negotiations are expected to be complicated. Al‑Qadsiah view Retegui as a central figure in their project and are reluctant to lose him. The Buenos Aires club are also evaluating alternatives such as Lucas Beltrán, Mauro Icardi and Giovanni Simeone. Retegui, meanwhile, has already attracted major European interest, having been linked to Manchester United during the winter window for a potential €50–60 million move.
