Roma came close to signing Marcos Leonardo last summer, but Santos decided to keep him because the club had already sold other players and were not doing well in the league. The Giallorossi was very confident that the deal would simply be put off until after the deadline, but his optimism has gradually faded. At this point, the capital club is not actively involved in the negotiations and has even withdrawn from it altogether. That could change, but they have little money to spend and bigger gaps in other areas.

Rafa Pimenta, Marcos Leonardo’s agent, was very emphatic that he will move abroad soon and did not mention Roma at all. He even stopped following the club on Instagram. Real Madrid and Newcastle United lead the race. These chances are unlikely to recur if they are not taken advantage of. The gaffer has no need for a forward in the short term and has to focus on other areas.
