Looking at things from the perspective of Bayern Munich, they have up to four wingers who fight for the same position. Despite them wanting to sign a player such as Leroy Sane, it was pretty unlikely that the player wanted to move there when at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola offered him a secured spot in the starting XI. The Catalan manager beat his former club to the punch in signing Sane, for Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Sane was an objective they missed to get.
He told Sport Bild that: "We cannot put a squad together by just stockpiling players, but have to take a good look at what we need every season. Had we brought in Sane this summer, we would not have been able to guarantee him regular first-team action. We already have Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, Franck Ribery, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski. That is a great attack."
Rummenigge also spoke about the reason why Julian Brandt wasn't signed either: "Julian paid us a visit together with his father when we heard he wanted to leave the Wolfsburg academy in 2013. We would have loved to sign him, but Julian made the decision to join Leverkusen. And we will now of course respect his contract with Leverkusen."
