After Andrea Pinamonti's penalty was saved by Montipo in the Gialloblu net, he scored the rebound to give Sassuolo the three points in a hard-fought battle against Verona. Despite controlling most of the ball, the home team struggled with finishing; Verona forward Giovane Nascimento had five shots.

Sassuolo, however, had a fantastic opportunity to win the match when Suat Serdar fouled Alieu Fadera in the Verona penalty box. Pinamonti went up and converted the rebound in spite of Montipo's excellent save. Both teams created chances in the first half, but the goalkeepers stopped them. Giovane and Suat Serdar's efforts caused Arijanet Muric to make many saves, and Lorenzo Montipò stopped Armand Laurienté's strong drive just before halftime. In the seventieth minute, the impasse was finally broken. After Alieu Fadera was pulled down in the box, Sassuolo was given a penalty.
