The Giallorossi desperately needed points since they were in a battle with Milan and Inter for fourth place and were without Nemanja Matic, Marash Kumbulla, Chris Smalling, Diego Llorente, Rick Karsdorp, Paulo Dybala, Gini Wijnaldum, and Andrea Belotti due to injury. Monza, on the other hand, were in a good mood after winning three in a row, including matches against Inter and Fiorentina.

After a Zeki Celik mistake, Rui Patricio had to make a stop on Dany Mota Carvalho within the first 45 seconds. After that, Carlos Augusto missed with a volley from a corner, and Nicola Zalewski tried to beat the custodian at the near post. Instead, Roma took the lead after Tammy Abraham stopped Michele Di Gregorio's gift, which he attempted to complete with the ball at his feet while walking around his own area.
