They needed to score away goals in order to get that edge for the return leg at Sevilla next week, they accomplished a fantastic first leg despite their rival's great response to their first half early goal by Vitolo.
The midfielder got a ball between the lines on the right flank and maneuvered towards the goalkeeper, his finish got inside the goal through the goalie's legs on the 6th minute of the match. But the local team had the guns to do their damage, and on the 23rd minute Marlos stood in front of Sevilla's goalkeeper to get that equalizer and give Shakhtar the hope of eliminating the current champions of the tournament. Shot to the bottom corner did the trick.
Ten minutes before half time, a corner kick for Shakhtar allowed the local squad to get ahead in the score line as Stepanenko headed home to leave things in suspense until the second half. By the end, eight minutes from the final whistle, Vitolo was taken down inside the box and a penalty was awarded for Sevilla. Kevin Gameiro took the shot from the spot and gave the Andalusian team the draw that gets them real close to their third straight final and that third consecutive trophy that would rise them to the very top of Europa League heaven.
