Colombian football witnessed an extraordinary upset as Barranquilla FC, effectively Junior Barranquilla’s B team, eliminated the senior side in the Colombia Cup after a tense tie settled on penalties. The two‑leg derby proved far more balanced than expected. Junior squandered a two‑goal lead in the first match, allowing Barranquilla to fight back to 2‑2 and keep the qualification wide open. The return fixture at the Romelio Martínez Stadium followed the same pattern, with neither team able to break the deadlock, forcing a decisive shoot‑out.

From the spot, Barranquilla showed remarkable composure, while Junior faltered at key moments, sealing a historic and symbolic triumph for the affiliate club. The result highlights the strength of Junior’s youth system, as many Barranquilla players developed within the same structure. For Junior, reigning Colombian champions, the elimination is a major embarrassment and has sparked intense debate. Barranquilla, meanwhile, celebrate a landmark achievement for their young squad.
