The Netherlands 2-0 Senegal

The Netherlands got hold to an advantage in World Cup Group A as goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen secured a 2-0 victory over African champions Senegal. The Lions of Teranga are missing their Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane, at this tournament and even though they fought hard, they still could not get past the debutant Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert. The win puts the Oranje, three times World Cup finalists, in a sturdy position in the group, with matches against Ecuador and hosts Qatar to occur.

Watford forward Ismaila Sarr had Senegal’s two most promising shots either side of De Jong fluffing his lines. Senegal aimed high and forced out an error from Noppert and the ball eventually got to Sarr, who curled over. Sarr then cut inside Denzel Dumfries to get space to shoot on the edge of the box. His was attempt was seeming to be goalbound but Virgil Van Dijk was able to head it over.
