Girona suffered an unexpected 2-0 loss at home to struggling Valencia on Saturday. The hosts won their first La Liga game in six attempts thanks to an own goal by Juanpe and a deflected goal by Dani Gomez within the opening two minutes of the second half. Valencia's win lifted them from the bottom to the 18th position with four points, one more than Getafe and two more than Las Palmas. Girona sits 13th with seven points, after becoming last year's surprise gift. In a dull first half, neither team was able to register a shot on goal, Valencia was toothless.
After a poor play-making error by the visiting defense, Valencia broke the scoreless draw in the fifty-sixth minute. After retrieving the lost ball, Gomez attempted a long-range shot that was going wide until it deflected off Juanpe of Girona and caught Gazzaniga off guard before ending up in the net. Two minutes later, Valencia clinch the victory thanks to another mistake by Girona's defense and Gomez scored for the side.
