Both teams started the match with a lot of energy as Valencia CF attempted to control possession and penetrate the Sevilla FC defense. Sergi Canós had the opening opportunity for Valencia CF, but his shot missed the mark. After a precise cross from José Luis Gayà, Roman Yaremchuk came dangerously close to opening the score, but in the 20th minute, Nyland stopped the Ukrainian striker from close range.

Fran Pérez nearly scored the opening goal of the match at Mestalla when he was able to latch onto a Dimitri Fouliquier pass and sprint down the right flank. Sadly, the Sevilla FC goalkeeper beat him just before the half-hour mark. After a corner kick, substitute Peter Federico almost broke the tie with a half-volley, but his shot fizzed just wide after bouncing off the ground.
