After Diego Maradona deemed Messi as a player without personality and lack of leadership, many Barcelona supporters and the Spanish press got outraged over the statements Maradona did in private to Pele and got leaked by accident. In order to defend Diego from the backlash, many Argentinian figures have attempted to lessen his statements and place both idols on the same table of conversation. Former Argentina midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, believes that Maradona's claims lack basis.
Talking to Fox Sports, Veron described the differences between a leader like Maradona and one such as Messi, but both leaders non the less: "Leo is a guy that does not radiate an overwhelming personality, as Maradona did in his time. He is quiet, but he has a strong hold over the group with his personality, without raising his voice. It is not necessary to have a strong personality. He does it his way."
Veron also spoke about what he expects from Argentina in this Copa America, he praised Gerardo Martino's job as the manager: "I like the team. I think it is a serious team, which creates confidence, but this does not mean today we will be champions. It is not a fancy or flashy team, but a team that you know that at any time you can win."
