DR Congo reached the World Cup last‑32 for the first time in their history after a stirring 3–1 comeback win over Uzbekistan in Atlanta, driven by two goals from Yoane Wissa. Uzbekistan struck first when Eldor Shomurodov produced a superb early lob over Lionel Mpasi, rewarding their bright start. DR Congo briefly thought they had equalised through Nathanael Mbuku, but VAR ruled out the strike for a soft foul.
Wissa, criticised for a difficult first season at Newcastle, levelled from the penalty spot after Abdukodir Khusanov’s reckless challenge. Moments later, Fiston Mayele pounced on a deflected effort to spark wild celebrations among the overwhelmingly Congolese crowd. Wissa then sealed the victory in stoppage time with a curling finish, his third goal of the tournament.
Uzbekistan, debutants under Fabio Cannavaro, exit without progressing, while DR Congo advance to face England next. Their success continues a remarkable tournament for African teams.
