Wolfsburg had the upper hand in a lacklustre match, but Union was on the verge of triumph when Josip Juranovic, a former Celtic wing-back, converted a penalty in the 72nd minute. Union, who had been in the top four for the majority of the season, had dropped to fifth before kickoff as a result of Freiburg's victory earlier on Sunday. In a gloomy first half, the home team prevailed, creating a few half-chances against the tenacious Union defence.
After 17 minutes, Wolfsburg midfielder Mattias Svanberg's free kick hit the crossbar. Omar Marmoush, an Egyptian winger, had a one-on-one opportunity with Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow but missed wide.
