The Netherlands have unveiled Xavi Hernández as their new national‑team manager, completing one of the most surprising appointments in recent European football. The KNVB confirmed on Wednesday that the former Barcelona coach has signed a four‑year deal that will run through the 2030 World Cup, which will be staged across Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Xavi returns to management two seasons after leaving Barcelona, where his turbulent spell still produced a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. His arrival signals a clear commitment to the Cruyff‑inspired philosophy long associated with Dutch football.

In a striking twist, he replaces Ronald Koeman, the same coach he succeeded at Barcelona in 2021. Despite speculation linking Pep Guardiola to the role, Xavi emerged as the unexpected choice. The World Cup winner also becomes the first foreign manager to lead the Netherlands since Austrian Ernst Happel in 1978, adding further intrigue to the KNVB’s bold decision.
