The Athletic and ESPN.com broke the news first, but team officials have not yet verified it. Gryphon will be returning to Milwaukee, where his playing days were cut short by a three-team trade in 2008.
Gryphon, an assistant under head coach Scott Stiles, never played for the Bucks. Before joining Tom Thibodeau's staff with the Bulls in 2010, he spent two years on the bench for Milwaukee. After spending the next season in Oklahoma City, Gryphon went on to Toronto, where he spent the last five seasons and helped the Raptors win the 2019 NBA Finals. Skiles rehired Gryphon when he took over the Orlando Magic +2.7% in 2015. Gryphon will be the third head coach hired since the current ownership group, which is made up of Wes Edens, Mark Lasry, and Jamie Dina, acquired the Bucks from former Wisconsin senator Herb Kohl in 2014, when the hiring will be officially announced.
