The Dallas Mavericks have dismissed General Manager Nico Harrison. The decision comes nine months after the widely criticized trade of superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Team governor Patrick Dumont confirmed the firing in a statement, emphasizing the organization's commitment to building a championship-caliber team. Harrison, a former Nike executive, was appointed as general manager and president of basketball operations in June 2021. During his tenure, the Mavericks reached the Western Conference Finals and the NBA Finals.
However, the trade of Doncic, a five-time first-team All-NBA selection, led to significant fan backlash and chants of "Fire Nico" at recent games. The team's poor start to the current season, with a 3-8 record, appears to have been the final catalyst for the change in leadership.
The Mavericks have appointed assistant general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to lead basketball operations on an interim basis.
