Kings cut ties with DeRozan as veteran hits free agency

DeMar DeRozan is officially a free agent after the Sacramento Kings waived the veteran forward, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The move had long been expected, with only $10 million of his $25.74 million salary guaranteed for 2026–27. Sacramento spent weeks exploring trade options with DeRozan’s camp but failed to find a workable deal, ultimately opting for a release that opens significant cap flexibility.

The Kings may still apply the stretch provision, spreading the guaranteed money over three seasons to create more than $22 million in immediate cap relief and avoid the tax apron. They have until August 29 to decide, though keeping the full $10 million hit would prevent future dead money. Regardless, DeRozan will not return to Sacramento.

Now seeking a stable role on a playoff contender, the 17‑year veteran remains a reliable scorer and late‑game threat. He averaged 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists across 77 appearances last season.
