Despite missing All-Star big Jaylen Brown and experienced point guard Dennis Schroder, the Boston Celtics defeated the Toronto Raptors 113–111 in a preseason exhibition game on October 9. The Celtics had an early lead before the Raptors clawed their way back into the game, with star forward Jayson Tatum putting up 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists, while teammate Al Horford looked nimble with 16 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Payton Pritchard, a second-year point guard, chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Fred Van Vleet led the Raptors with 22 points and 5 assists, while new teammate Precious Achiuwa recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. On the road, Boston will face the Orlando Magic in a repeat of their exhibition opener on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
