In the lead-up to the last weekend of the regular season, the outcome moved the Thunder (39-42) one step closer to securing a position in the play-in tournament while eliminating the undermanned Jazz (36-44) from postseason contention. In the victory on Thursday night, eight OKC players scored nine points or more, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way with 22 points. Giddey and his colleagues from the Thunder will qualify for the play-in if they defeat Memphis on Sunday afternoon.
For the Jazz, Kris Dunn scored a game-high 22 points, while Kelly Olynyk ended with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. Playing without four starters, Utah came within one point of overtaking the Thunder five times in the third quarter but was unable to do it after falling down by as many as 16 points early on. The Thunder increased their advantage to 84-76 heading into the fourth quarter after thwarting the Jazz's attempts to mount a comeback.
