3x3's Olympic debut this year has six more teams who would be participating after qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 games. USA, France, Japan (women) and Poland, Netherlands, and Latvia (men) have booked their berth in the tournament. In the women’s category, France qualified first after they beat Japan by 15-14 with Marie-Eve Paget’s help. The USA also completed their unbeaten run by going 6-0 in Graz. Japan got the last spot by winning the match against Spain in overtime with MVP Stephanie Mawuli’s buzzer-beater shot. The three teams now join the Russian Olympic Committee, Romania, and Mongolia who qualified as per ranking.
In the men’s category, Poland booked a spot first by beating Latvia in the Semi-finals by 20-18. The Netherlands then defeated France to take second place and Latvia grabbed the last berth. They would compete against Serbia, the Russian Olympic Committee, China, and Japan. The FIBA 3x3 Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Debrecen, Hungary would offer the last spot in the men’s and women’s category.
