The 76ers have withheld $8.25 million from holdout Ben Simmons

In reaction to his strike, the Philadelphia 76ers put 25% of the money owing to guard Ben Simmons under his contract – $8.25 million — into an escrow account. The Sixers have stated that any fines Simmons accrues would be deducted from his account. Simmons has requested a trade and has not reported to the team for training camp. Simmons' contract stipulates that he will be paid $8.25 million in two installments before the season begins. He got his first payment on August 2nd.

The Sixers face the Raptors in Toronto on Monday to begin their pre-season campaign. Simmons is expected to be fined $227,000 if he misses that game. For each game he misses, that amount will be deducted. Over the course of his four NBA seasons, Simmons has averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game.
