The Mavericks are still reportedly interested in re-signing Irving

The Mavericks are still reportedly interested in re-signing Irving, who is set to become an unrestricted free agency this summer. Irving should take Russell's position, according to insiders who spoke to Heavy Sports. Los Angeles lacks the cap room necessary to sign Irving, who is seeking a maximum contract, though. Irving's acquisition by the Lakers would need a sign-and-trade agreement with the Mavericks, but it appears that Dallas has no interest in accomplishing so.

Irving would be qualified to re-sign with the Mavericks on a five-year, $272 million deal if the NBA had a salary cap of $134 million. In 20 games with Dallas this season, the eight-time All-Star averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists. This summer, Russell, like Irving, becomes an unrestricted free agency. According to insiders who spoke to Heavy Sports, the Ohio State product would prefer to re-sign with the Lakers.
