The Indiana Pacers have signed second-round selection Tristen Newton to a two-way deal. Netwon, a 6-foot-5 guard from UConn, was chosen with the 49th choice overall. In this year's draft, four UConn players were selected, including him. With the Pacers, Netwon, 23, played in five Las Vegas Summer League games and averaged 9.0 points, 4.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. Now he and point guard Quenton Jackson are the Pacers' two two-way players. Indiana is still open to a two-way agreement.
Newton, of course, is joining a Pacers team that advanced to the Eastern Conference finals after winning back-to-back NCAA titles with the Huskies. The Boston Celtics, who went on to win the championship, swept the Pacers. In addition to Newton, the Pacers also picked former Akron forward Enrique Freeman and Spanish point guard Juan Nunez in the draft. During his last season at UConn, Newton averaged 15.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 6.2 assists.
