Temba Bavuma of New South Africa grabbed command of his team's Test against the West Indies with a drought-breaking 171 not out at the Wanderers. Bavuma has not struck a century since his maiden Test ton in 2016, when he helped the Proteas win the second Test by 356 runs. After a pair of ducks in the first Test, the skipper produced a career-best effort, scoring his second Test century off 192 balls before closing the day with a score of 171* off 275 balls.
South Africa got off to a shaky start, losing Dean Elgar (5) and Tony de Zorzi (1) within the first hour of the first session before Aiden Markram went for 18, leaving the hosts 32/3. South Africa finished the day on 287/7 after a 103-run sixth-wicket stand between Bavuma and Wiaan Mulder (42).
