In the opening one-day international in Napier, New Zealand easily defeated Pakistan by 73 runs on Saturday thanks to a brilliant century from Mark Chapman and four wickets from Nathan Smith. At McLean Park, an overwhelming 344-9 was built on Chapman's career-best 132 before Pakistan's promising chase collapsed to be all out for 271 in the 45th over. With more than 11 overs left and 96 runs needed to win, the tourists appeared to be on track at 249-3. Smith, a seamer, contributed to a late collapse, though, as the final seven wickets fell for 22 runs.
Pakistan’s collapse began with the removal of Babar Azam, who had earlier top-scored for Pakistan with 78 off 83 balls. Salman Agha put up a valiant 58 off 48, but a string of poor strokes from his lower-order companions let him down, and New Zealand took a one-match lead in the three-match series.
