New Zealand batted first and scored a whopping 212, driving West Indies into a crucial 27-6, possibly their lowest-ever total in an ODI. However, a rain break and strong-headed late-order batting shifted the tone of the match on Friday.
When it stopped raining, the West Indies had to chase 212 under 51 overs after being left at 63-7 before the break. The unexpectedly exceptional performance of Yanick Cariah who slammed a half century in his first innings in an ODI and also maintained an 85-run partnership with Alzarri Joseph (49), became a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. Cariah was the last to leave with a grand total of 161, after Joseph dropped out at 157-9.
Allen dropped out at 96 when NZ was 165-7. Trent Boult and Tim Southee staggered the WI top and middle order. Southee pocketed 4 wickets while Boult checked out at 3-18. The series has levelled at 1-1, making Sunday's third international the tie-breaker.
