New Zealand romped to a 198-run win in the first one-day international

Tall seamer Shipley, who was just in his fourth game for the Black Caps, took 5-31 as the tourists were bowled out for 76 at Eden Park, their lowest ODI total against New Zealand and fifth-lowest overall. It was Sri Lanka's second shortest innings as they were defeated in 19.5 overs. After falling behind 31-5, the visitors never recovered, and just three hitters, including leading scorer Angelo Mathews, reached double figures.

It occurs barely two months after Sri Lanka's 73-run defeat to India in Thiruvananthapuram, which set a new world record loss by 317 runs. The team's captain, Dasun Shanaka, pointed out several obvious areas that needed to be strengthened before Tuesday's second game in Christchurch. Tom Latham, the captain of the New Zealand team, expressed doubt over whether their total score of 274 would be sufficient at the little Eden Park pitch.
