New Zealand won by 5 wickets

After a four-match losing streak, New Zealand has bounced back in the Cricket World Cup. They defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, almost guaranteeing their spot in the semifinals. The fourth-place New Zealand team's pursuit of 172 was quickly underway thanks to opening batsmen Devon Conway (45) and Rachin Ravindra (42). Daryl Mitchell (43) then brought them close to the finish line in 23.2 overs on Thursday.

With victory, New Zealand moved up to 10 points, giving them the advantage to take the last semifinal slot and join Australia, South Africa, and India. In order to overtake New Zealand in terms of net run rate, Pakistan will now have to defeat England by an almost insurmountable margin. Before their match against South Africa, Afghanistan, who similarly had little chance of making it to the knockout stages, found themselves in a similar situation to their Asian neighbours.
