Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Ravichandran Ashwin on reaching 500 wickets, saying he thought the brilliant off-spinner ought to have been named Test team captain two years prior. When Ashwin removed England opener Zak Crawley in their opening innings on Friday, he joined Anil Kumble as the only other Indian bowler to achieve the 500-wicket mark as quickly as possible.
According to Gavaskar, Ashwin's skill has always made him a potential captain for India. He said that the greatest moment to give him the honor would have been two years ago. India has fielded a number of teams in the past year, most notably in 2021, when the Test team consisted of veteran players and more well-known stars in England, while a younger second-string lineup was in Sri Lanka for a limited-overs tour, led by Rahul Dravid. Since then, this has continued, which is why Gavaskar finds the prospect of Ashwin leading the team intriguing.
