South Africa choose to bat, giving legspinner Gavin Hoey his debut

In the first ODI between South Africa and Ireland in Abu Dhabi, skipper Temba Bavuma chose to bat. After being left off of the team for South Africa's 2-1 loss to Afghanistan in the series, Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen managed to find a spot in the starting lineup. After being benched for the T20I series, Andy Balbirnie returned for the ODIs and was paired with Paul Stirling at the opening spot. Gavin Hoey a legspinner has been handed his first ODI cap while Stephen Doheny will be the wicketkeeper for the team. The field has more grass than usual, and a par score of 260–270 is anticipated.

Ireland’s team list includes Paul Stirling, Andy Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Harry Tector, Stephen Doheny (wk), George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Andy McBrine, Graham Hume, Craig Young, and Gavin Hoey. South Africa’s team list:  Ryan Rickelton (wk), Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma (capt), Rassie van der Dussen, Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, Ottneil Baartman, Bjorn Fortuin, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi, and Andile Phehlukwayo.
