When Zimbabwe defeated Ireland by five wickets on Thursday to win the first Twenty20 international of their three-match series, former England batsman Gary Ballance made 30 runs in his international debut for Zimbabwe. Only three players in Ireland reached double digits, and Gareth Delany led the way with 24 as they were bowled out for just 114.
Ross Adair, who filled in for the absent Paul Stirling, was given his first career dismissal for five. Ireland scored twice with the new ball despite also losing Josh Little to the franchise circuit, but Ballance and Sean Williams (34 not out) eventually took care of the majority of the middle-order runs. With two overs remaining in the three-match series, Zimbabwe took the lead with two wickets each from Harry Tector and Mark Adair.
