It can't have happened very often over the past ten years for Liverpool to have enjoyed a stronger transfer window than Manchester City. But as of right now—and in sports, things can change quickly—that seems a reasonable appraisal of the business the teams did in January. The biggest deal on either side seems to involve leaving rather than joining. Joao Cancelo was permitted by City to sign a loan deal with Bayern Munich after allegedly clashing with Pep Guardiola.
Liverpool added an intriguing young talent who should immediately contribute to the club, even though they did not fill the most obvious gap in their lineup by adding a midfielder. Cody Gakpo joined the team at a particularly difficult period on the field but has yet to make an impact. But given his track record, it seems only a matter of time until he contributes to a goal.
