Arnett Gardens Beats Portmore United 3-1

JAMAICA PREMIER LEAGUE

KINGSTON, JAMAICA

Monday, August 16, 2021

Arnett Gardens stunned champions Portmore United with an exciting come-from-behind 3-1 win in their Jamaica Premier League (JLP) encounter at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence.

Earl Simpson scored an own goal and gave Portmore United a 17th-minute lead but Donovan Segree and Jonoy Cunningham scored in the 19th and 27th minutes and gave Arnett Gardens the advantage before substitute Shadane Lopez put the icing on the cake in the 88th minute.

Simpson bundled in a Chavany Willis free-kick that gave Portmore the lead but Arnett responded in style.

Segree fed Cunningham with a beautiful pass and the defender turned forward made no mistake and pulled Arnett leveled.

But Segree wasn’t finished and he scored one of the goals of the season with a wonderful free-kick that curled into the top right-hand corner and gave goalkeeper Kemar Foster no chance whatsoever.

Segree, who was named man-of-the-match, popped up again with another assist, this time releasing Lopez who fired low and hard past Foster.

It was a stunning win from the less-fancied Arnett Gardens as they climbed off the bottom of the table into the ninth spot on seven points with a massive win.

It was just their second win of the season from seven games and it was a well-deserved one that has given them a slight glimmer of hope in making the playoffs.

The Junglists are now just two points adrift of the last playoff spot held currently by Tivoli Gardens on nine points.

For Portmore United, they really missed a glorious chance of going top of the league and in the process booking their playoff spot.

Instead, they remained in the second spot on 13 points from eight games after suffering their third defeat of the season.

It was the second time Portmore United is losing to Arnett Gardens in their last four outings and they were really played off the park by Arnett Gardens.

Romeo Guthrie, Donovan Segree, Damari Deacon, Janoy Cunningham, Renaldo Cephas, Oshane Roberts, Marlon Martin, and Earl Simpson led Arnett Gardens to their best performance of the season, at a time when they were written off by most pundits.

It just shows that on any given day, any one of the 11 teams can beat any team. It’s that competitive with nothing much between the teams.
