Atlético Madrid has secured a return to Champions League for the 10th consecutive year. Diego Simeone’s side took out Elche, by two goals at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero with help from Matheus Cunha at the end of 28 minutes. Later on, Rodrigo de Paul doubled the lead to 2-0 after three minutes after an hour. Atlético Madrid along with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona would return to Champions League next season, leaving just the last place up for grabs.
De Paul scored not only the second goal for Atlético but also doubled his total in La Liga. Despite the rollercoaster ride for Atlético they have clinched the top four spot and maintain their status in the Champions League. In the past ten years, they have taken part in two Champions League finals.
