Betis Top four hopes takes a back seat

Real Betis's hopes of landing a Champions League spot took a step back as they slip 1-0 against Elche in La Liga. The winner came in the 82nd minute when Tete Morente netted and Betis lost their first match in seven games across competitions. Manuel Pellegrini's side was already behind by a goal and they ended up losing Paul Akouokou to a red card when just a few minutes were left in the match for his challenge on Lucas Olaza.

Betis had a real chance to pass over fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with a win by two or more goals. In another match Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal’s hopes of landing a top six spot took a boost as they took out Valencia by 2-0 moving them three points ahead of Real Sociedad.
