Bordeaux ground out a 2-1 victory away to AS Saint-Etienne

Hwang Ui-jo scored twice to lead Girondins de Bordeaux to their first win of the season, a 2-1 triumph against AS Saint-Etienne in severe rain on Saturday. Bordeaux took the lead in the seventh minute when Jean Onana released Yacine Adli, who squared the ball to leave Hwang with a simple finish.

The weather dictated the second half, as an apocalyptic rainstorm rendered the pitch nearly unplayable. The game continued, however, and Saint-Etienne pushed forward in search of an equalizer, which came in the 73rd minute when Khazri outmuscled Edson Mexer in the box and fired a low shot into the far corner of the net from a tight angle. Bordeaux was on the back foot, but with 10 minutes remaining, replacement Rémi Oudin set up Hwang, who scored a fantastic first-time finish beyond Etienne Green.
