Patrik Schick's 20th Bundesliga goal was not enough to prevent Bayer Leverkusen from losing 3-2 at Mainz. Before Marcus Ingvartsen scored the late winner, the home club, which was wearing a special colored jersey for the local carnival celebrations, came from behind twice to end Leverkusen's high-scoring run.
When the Danish forward dragged the ball back with his right boot and nudged it home with his left in the 88th minute, he was surrounded by defenders. After scoring at least four goals in each of its previous three games, Leverkusen hoped to maintain the third position and put pressure on second-placed Borussia Dortmund. Schick scored 10 minutes before halftime with the help of a deflection off Mainz captain Moussa Niakhat, putting the visitors back on track.
