Champions League Opener: Chelsea 0, Dinamo Zagreb 1

Dinamo Zagreb claimed a surprising victory over Chelsea in their Champions League group stage opener as they thrashed the 2021 European champions 1-0 at home, owing to a ground breaking solo run from Croatian forward Mislav Orsic. Zagreb had conceded in each home game in the league this season but maintained a clean chit against the Premier League, who have now lost three of their last five matches. Zagreb opened the scoring when Orsic was pushed through on goal on a solo counter-attack, outrunning Chelsea’s newcomer Wesley Fofana and beating goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a fine touch.

Chelsea did create scoring opportunities in the opening stages but were brought to failure by the goal and Thomas Tuchel’s side looked stumped in front of a resolute Zagreb defence. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang debuted alongside Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz in the front line but they failed miserably.
