Defending champion Atlético Madrid fell to lowly Levante

Atlético Madrid failed to take advantage of a good opportunity which could have placed them closer to the top in La Liga after they fell cheaply with 1-0 to last-place Levante at home on Wednesday. Gonzalo Melero scored the winner for the bottom dwellers who got their hands on their second win in as many as 24 matches in the Spanish league. Atlético was close to landing the final Champions League qualification spot but they are still fifth as they tie with fourth-place Barcelona.

The Valencia club on the other hand is 10 points from safety and Atlético squandered the chance to level the score as well when their stoppage-time effort by Ángel Correa’s was disallowed late.
