Striker Moussa Dembele converted a match-winning first-half penalty to help Lyon with a 1-0 win over their bitter rivals in Ligue 1 on Friday. Dembele’s sixth goal of the season was an expertly directed goal while Saint-Etienne goalkeeper Paul Bernardoni went the wrong way at the 15th minute. Both the team’s rivalry goes back decades when once Saint-Etienne dominated the French league with 10 league titles but Lyon holds the record with the most consecutive league titles, seven from 2002-08, both the teams are just divided by 37 miles.
This season Lyon has been disappointing under coach Peter Bosz to stay adrift of 19 points behind leader Paris Saint-Germain and Saint-Etienne is worse off with just two wins from 21 matches and maintains a seven straight league defeat record to stay at the bottom of the standings.
