DR Congo edge Nigeria on penalties and fly to intercontinental play-off

The Democratic Republic of Congo shattered Nigeria's World Cup aspirations with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory after their CAF playoff final ended in a 1-1 draw. The win sends DR Congo to the intercontinental playoff, keeping their hopes of a first World Cup appearance since 1974 (when they were Zaire) alive.

Nigeria took an early lead through a Frank Onyeka goal in the third minute. However, DR Congo fought back, with Meschack Elia equalizing in the 32nd minute. Meanwhile, star Victor Osimhen was forced off because of injury and Nigeria lost their attacking power. After a goalless extra time, the match went to a tense shootout.

DR Congo's substitute goalkeeper, Timothy Fayulu, became the hero, saving Semi Ajayi's attempt in the sixth round of penalties. Chancel Mbemba then stepped up to score the decisive spot-kick, sealing a historic victory and extending Nigeria's absence from the World Cup.
