Empoli tied with Sampdoria 1-1

Empoli tied Sampdoria 1-1 on Monday in Serie A, thereby securing another season in the top division. Three minutes into extra time on Monday in Genoa, substitute Roberto Piccoli made a goal. After Fabio Quagliarella had set him up, Alessandro Zanoli had given Sampdoria the lead in the 34th minute. Empoli now has 39 points with three games remaining, nine points more than the danger zone. But since Lecce (30) and Spezia (32) are in a matchup on Sunday, one of them will surely finish behind Empoli. The first two available relegation slots are taken. 

Sampdoria, who was already certain to be demoted, continued to finish bottom. The Blucerchiati have picked up only three league wins, while having the worst attack and the worst defence in the league so far.
