Brentford defeated Premier League champions Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a late strike from Ethan Pinnock, but despite finishing ninth, they were unable to qualify for the Europa Conference League. With five minutes left, Pinnock scored after being set up by Bryan Mbeumo, giving Brentford a well-deserved lead over a significantly altered City team who lacked their typical ferocity.
Erling Haaland, a striker for City, sat on the bench as Kevin De Bruyne was left out of the lineup. Pep Guardiola's team struggled to create clear chances for the majority of the game but had a chance to steal a point in stoppage time. In the dying minutes, Pinnock stopped two of Cole Palmer's shots, while Ben Mee cleared off the line another. Brentford was the only side to defeat the champions both at home and away this year.
