Félix Sánchez had been in the post since 2017 and could not resist Qatar’s poor results at the 2022 World Cup, adding defeats in the group stage, which had never happened to a selection from the organizing country.
"We've had some wonderful years together, full of incredible moments that will go down in the history of Qatari football forever. Thank you for everything, Mr Sánchez!", wrote QFA on its Twitter account.
Sánchez, 47, began his career in the youth ranks of FC Barcelona in 1996. After 10 years at the Catalan training centre, he headed to Doha, to the Aspire academy, with the mission of identifying and training talent.
In 2013, he started guiding the under-19 team in Qatar, winning the Asian championship in the following year. His next steps were under-21 and under-23 coaching, before becoming first-team coach as he won the Asian championship in 2019.
