Feyenoord beat Celtic 2-0 in their Champions League opener

Celtic's second-half collapse against Feyenoord left them down to nine men, and they were unable to secure a Champions League away victory. Daizen Maeda made an early danger for them as they got off to a strong start, but just before halftime, Calvin Stengs' free-kick startled the Hoops. In response, Gustaf Lagerbielke gave up a penalty and received a second yellow card before Joe Hart saved the spot-kick and the Dutch champs came alive.

When replacement Odin Thoago Holm was given a straight red for a careless challenge, the evening took a turn for the worst. Feyenoord had more attempts disallowed on each side of that goal, but Alireza Jahanbakhsh sealed the victory for his team. Due to Nat Phillips' ankle injury, Lagerbielke was one of Celtic's two summer acquisitions in the starting lineup. Luis Palma, a winger, started for the team for the first time.
