Getafe started the game seeking their first victory of the year and had the opportunity to get things going when they were given a penalty in the first half. Following a VAR penalty for tripping Borja Mayoral, the referee consulted the pitch side monitor before awarding the penalty kick to David Soria. Mayoral, a former Roma player, had a penalty saved in the Sociedad goal by Soria.
The visitors' jubilation was short-lived, however, as seven minutes before halftime, they were forced to replace Nigerian Umar Sadiq, who hobbled off the field and was replaced by Mohamed-Ali "Momo" Cho. Then, in the final seconds of the first half, Getafe dealt another blow when Turkish attacker Enes Unal's skillfully taken free kick gave them the lead. Three minutes after the break, Carles Alena scored the second goal for the home team.
