In a matchup of recently promoted teams in the Spanish league, Oriol Romeu's late goal gave Girona a 2-1 victory against Valladolid. On Friday, Reinier Carvalho gave Girona the lead in the 21st minute after scoring off a pass from Aleix Garcia after the latter had retrieved the ball nearby. Both teams created early chances until Real Madrid loanee Jesus appeared and put the home team ahead. However, that advantage was eliminated just before halftime as Monchu's incredible long-range goal brought Valladolid back into the game.
In the second half, Girona gradually picked up the pace while Aleix Garcia was denied, and Romeu, a summer addition, gambled on a loose ball inside the box to score the game-winning goal. Next weekend, Girona will go to Real Betis, while Real Valladolid will host Cadiz in an effort to improve their dismal record.
