Substituting Ronaldo in the starry XI, Goncalo Ramos bagged a stunning hat-trick as Portugal defeated Switzerland 6-1 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
Tuesday was a night to remember for Goncalo Ramos, who earned Portugal a sixth straight victory by replacing Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI and scoring three hat-tricks in a 6-1 win over Switzerland in Qatar. Portugal clinched their quarter-final berth as well. Goncalo Ramos scored his first goal of the tournament in the 17th minute and added two more in the 51st and 67th minutes.
Prior to being selected for the FIFA World Cup squad in November, he had never played for Portugal. He made the squad after Diogo Jota was forced to withdraw from the squad. Ramos was given the No. 26 shirt in Portugal's squad, and he saw action for just a few minutes as a late sub in the victories over Ghana and Uruguay. He had zero shots in those games.
